2nd Annual Star Awards Honors Educators & Administrators (4/20/2010)

Tuesday, March 30, 2010 – Wind Gap, Pa. – For the second year, Colonial Intermediate Unit 20 presented its STAR (Superior Technology Achievement Recognition) Awards to honor the outstanding integration of technology into classrooms and schools throughout Northampton, Monroe and Pike counties.  Eight outstanding district educators received STAR Awards for their work as teachers, administrators and technology coaches and their innovative use/support of technology to enhance student learning. 

 Over 80 nominations were received from administrators, colleagues, teachers, technology integrators/coaches, and/or technology directors.  Four worthy nominees, chosen by a panel of judges based on lesson plans, rubrics and student work, were then selected and one was named the category winner.  The award nominees and winners, who were announced at the ceremony included:

  • Best Use of Technology in Math:

  • Best Use of Technology in Science:

      • Nominee-Shannon Mackes, Pleasant Valley School District
      • Nominee-Kim Tassinaro, Saucon Valley School District
      • Nominee-Helene Tscheschlog, East Stroudsburg Area School District
  • Best Use of Technology in English
    • WINNER-Patricia Turner, East Stroudsburg Area School District

To illustrate the outstanding achievements of these educators, video vignettes of their work in their schools and classrooms were played during the awards dinner.

 Dr. Gerald L. Zahorchak, Secretary of Education for the Pennsylvania Department of Education also provided recorded remarks to the group of 80 educators during the awards ceremony, which also recognized eight outstanding educators from CIU 20 school districts for their outstanding integration of 21st century teaching skills in the classroom.

 The ceremony, held at Colonial Academy in Wind Gap, PA, featured a reception, with hors d’oeuvres and dinner provided by Mr. Dario Chavez, teacher and various students from the Colonial Academy Culinary Arts Program.  Decorations for the evening were made by Louis Squillace, teacher and various students from Colonial Academy art classes.  Dinner was followed by remarks from Dr. Mary Beth Bianco, Assistant Executive Director, Colonial Intermediate Unit 20; Heather Brown, Coordinator of Educational Technology, Colonial Intermediate Unit 20; and recorded remarks by Dr. Zahorchak.   Dr. Bianco was joined by distinguished guests from CIU 20 school districts and noted community members.
