Multidisabilities Support

This program concentrates on the physical, communication and self-help skills of students with two or more disabilities, which severely impair their progress in a general education curriculum.

According to IDEA 2004, multiple disabilities means concomitant impairments (such as mental retardation-blindness, mental retardation-orthopedic impairment, etc.), the combination of which causes such severe educational needs that they cannot be accommodated in special education programs solely for one of the impairments. The term does not include deaf-blindness.

    Curriculum and Instruction

    A trans-disciplinary approach is implemented to ensure all services are coordinated and focused to address the students’ Individual Education Programs (IEPs). A strong emphasis is placed on communication and daily living skills. Assistive technology is often required to help these students communicate and become more independent and self-sufficient.

    Students in the multidisabilities support program often require extraordinary amounts of special education services, such as: low student-teacher ratio, speech therapy, occupational therapy, physical therapy, vision therapy, and/or hearing therapy.

    In order to address students’ wide variety of academic and functional needs, different curriculums are utilized and adapted as deemed appropriate.

    • The Carolina Curriculum is an assessment and intervention program designed for students with mild to severe special needs. This curriculum addresses the following areas: personal-social, cognition, cognition/communication, communication, fine motor, and gross motor.
    • The Eden Core Curriculum encompasses teaching strategies for students ages three through 14. It includes teaching programs in the areas of learning readiness, pre-academics, academics, occupational skills, social and play skills, as well as general information regarding behavioral teaching techniques.
    • Star Reporter is designed to provide curricular integration through alignment with general education standards and functional areas as defined in student IEPs. This supplemental program is designed to incorporate assistive technology into real-life learning experiences for children with special needs.
