School age special education programs offered by CIU 20 include the following: Life Skills Support,
Multidisabilities Support, Emotional Support, Learning Support, Physical Support, Autistic Support,
Vision Support, and Hearing Support. In addition to the programs that we operate for students mainly
with low incidence disabilities, we work with over 100 schools, in 13 school districts to support the
maintenance of minimally disabled students in district operated special education programs and regular
education classes. We also provide direct instruction and support services for 1,200 preschool
developmentally delayed students and support to students in Department of Public Welfare sponsored
We provide itinerant services to early intervention and school age students with speech/language problems,
vision problems, and students with hearing problems. These services include speech/language support,
vision support, orientation & mobility and hearing support.
Other related services for school age and early intervention students include school psychologist services,
psychiatric referral service, occupational therapy, physical therapy, adaptive physical education, health
services, social skills development services, transition planning services, audiological services, and
specialized transportation. Additional services include extended school year (ESY), interagency
collaboration, and surrogate parent training. We are designated as a regional child accounting
center and participate in PA school based ACCESS.
As evidenced by our mission statement, CIU 20 is a resourceful community partner supporting student growth
through education, social services, and business opportunities. The Special Education department
collaborates with district personnel, CIU 20 staff, agencies, and parents to provide an array of
programs and services across exceptionalities to meet the needs of children, as deemed appropriate.
IU 20 will continue to take a leadership role in special education while being responsive to stakeholders’
needs, as well as being fiscally responsible as an organization.
