CIU 20 RESOLVE Behavioral Health Services Department Holds Picnic
Thursday, May 27, 2010 – Lower Nazareth, Pa. – Colonial Intermediate Unit 20 Partial Hospitalization and Emotional Support program students, their families and friends, and Colonial Intermediate Unit 20 employees attended the annual RESOLVE Family Picnic for Northampton County schools held at the Louise B. Moore Park in Lower Nazareth, PA. The event, for students in grades Kindergarten through 12th grade, featured fun games, great food, and the opportunity to learn for students and their families.
From a social aspect, the Family Picnic Day provides a fun day for students to work on their peer interaction skills and compete in organized, team building activities. Additionally, families are able to interact with other families and develop friendships, support networks, and share resources while also meeting the staff members who interact and teach their children on a daily basis.
From a treatment perspective, the event serves as a good social experience for students with disabilities allowing interaction in social settings. The Colonial Intermediate Unit 20 staff is in attendance to observe student interaction with their own families and the others in attendance to provide additional insight into the student’s disabilities and treatment plans.
Most of the food is provided; however, many families take advantage of the opportunity to bring a covered dish. Activities throughout the day include tug of war, relay races, volleyball and other traditional picnic activities.
Students in the Partial Hospitalization and Emotional Support Programs are often unable to achieve success in the regular education setting. These students receive support from a team of treatment specialists from the CIU 20 RESOLVE Behavioral Health Program including clinicians, mental health workers, and special education and associate teachers, who can further meet their needs. The goal of these programs is to help students to return to their home school district.
